Hundreds of thousands of Brazilians poured into the streets of at least 25 cities across the country Monday, blanketing the streets of major cities like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and climbing to the roof of the Brazilian National Congress in Brasilia, the nation’s capital. The protests, sparked last week by a smaller demonstration against fare hikes on public buses, are taking place around the Confederations Cup, the soccer tournament that began Saturday as a tune-up for Brazil’s 2014 hosting of the World Cup.

The World Cup has become a symbol of corruption and overspending in the country. Brazil, originally slated to spend less than $1 billion in private funding on soccer stadiums, has already spent more than $3 billion, most of which has come from public funds. Meanwhile, schools and hospitals are overcrowded, understaffed, and underfunded, infrastructure is crumbling, and income inequality is rising as Brazil’s minimum wage remains low. The money spent on the World Cup, the protesters say, would be better spent on efforts to help ordinary Brazilians.

Though there were small pockets of violence during demonstrations in some cities, the vast majority of the protests remained peaceful, according to local news reports. Here are pictures from Monday’s protests.

I often wish that I was as naturally quirky and wonderful as Claire Boucher but then I remember that it is the fact that she unapologetically owns who she is that makes her so unique.
So in the spirit of Claire I shall stay here with my average clothing, my average hair, and my average makeup because they make me me and I like me.
More importantly I like this world (or maybe just this person) that is becoming increasingly more aware of the importance of choice. You can choose to act within social norms or you can choose to act outside of them. Being free means being free to choose, not just being free to dye your hair green. I like that.

Although I don’t really like the tagline for this article, the piece is actually really great, IMO.

After seeing West’s performance of New Slaves on SNL and hearing the leak for I am (a) God, I was blown away, but just because I’m digging it overall doesn’t mean that we can’t also have a serious discussion about some very problematic, recurring themes (or tropes, as they are referenced as in this article) present in this latest album.

Also, I’m sure everybody remembered Kanye’s really cool and introspective twitter discussion with himself re: using the word “bitch”. Did he just chuck that out the window? I thought he came to some really good conclusions but it’s “bitches” galore on a lot of his new tracks.
